Our Chardonnay vines on the Estate are now more than 20 years old, and their strength of character is becoming more and more apparent each vintage. First planted in 1992, these are among the oldest such vines in the new world and their low yields and early ripening ability have been a perfect match for our climate and soils.
Produced from some of the oldest Dijon clones on our Estate, the Chardonnay is hand-picked, hand-sorted and then pressed whole cluster. The juice was fermented in 100% French Oak barrels to create a round, rich texture. After 11 months in barrel, Véronique selected her favorite barrels, those that were distinct and delicious. The Edition Limitée Chardonnay has a rich texture and great length on the palate. Beautiful and compelling, this cuvée possesses all of the Drouhin hallmarks - elegant and balanced, all with great finesse.
2016 marks the third consecutive season of warm, dry and largely harmonious growing conditions. Spring came early, and the vineyards enjoyed the warmer and drier weather. This helped maintain small clusters and berries that could mature evenly between bloom and harvest. In fact, harvest began during the last days of August, but a cooler September allowed us to achieve an overall balance of flavor and layered complexity.
The 2016 Edition Limitée Chardonnay welcomes you with compelling aromatics and a sense of intensity. Delicate white flowers, quince, lemon custard, marzipan, almonds and ripe white peaches are all found on the nose. On the palate, the structure is round and balanced, with a bright, lively character. It finishes with considerable length, suggesting that decanting for 30 minutes would be useful. One can look forward to five to seven years of development in the bottle.
