The Cuvée: The Louise cuvée is always special. In each vintage, Véronique knows that there lies hidden a very small, very special selection of her favorite barrels that, once nurtured and artfully blended, will become Louise. Seamless, complex, layered and deeply, deeply pleasing, it is a special wine, a rare treat. It is Louise. Winemaking: All of our Pinot Noir is handpicked and hand-sorted, and then allowed to ferment according to its own timetable. We use approximately 20% new oak with our Pinot Noir, which allows the character of the wine and vintage to show through. Barrels are custom made for us in Burgundy, using oak from France's best forests. Our goal is to produce Pinot Noirs with balance, elegance and finesse and our cuvée Louise sits at the top of that pedestal.
The 2007 Vintage: 2007 will long be remembered for a long, graceful growing season that gave way to three weeks of harvest handwringing. In the end, a year's worth of superb vineyard management and a month of microscopic attention to detail allowed for a very successful vintage. It's been easier before and since, but vignerons live for the challenge. According to Véronique, "some families take vacations together - we gather in Oregon for harvest. In 2007, my father and brother spent three intense weeks deciding exactly when to pick each vineyard block. It was not easy, but the incoming fruit was superb.”
Véronique's Tasting Notes: To me, the 07 Louise stands out for its completeness. Balance is something I prize, and there is nothing out of place here. The texture is rich but not heavy, the tannins are fine but present, and the structure is firm. The flavors are intense, but a little wild, with lots of spice and red fruits. No question this wine will age for 10 years or more! Véronique Drouhin-Boss - March 2010
